Puzzles that change one rule and see what happens.

OrbitMeadow builds small Android games that run entirely on the phone they were installed on: no account, no connection, nothing to buy. The first is Trilign, which takes the sliding-merge puzzle everyone knows and moves it off two and onto three.

3 THE STUDIO

One change, then the honesty to follow it all the way through

It would have been easy to ship another doubling puzzle with a new skin. Moving the merge from two tiles to three sounds like a cosmetic change and is not: triples are rarer than pairs, the board fills faster, and every heuristic people carry over from the doubling games quietly stops working. Half the design work was rebalancing everything around that, and the other half was resisting the urge to soften it.

What we did not add is the usual scaffolding. No advert after a lost run, no undo to buy, no bundle of extra tiles when the board tightens. A run ends when it ends, and the best score means something because nothing outside your own planning can move it.

Everything ships inside the download, so the game behaves the same on the metro, on a plane, or with the router unplugged — and it speaks both English and Italian from the first screen.

9 THE GAME
TRILIGN

merge threes, not twos

Slide the board and matching tiles collide — but here it takes three of the same value to merge, fusing into the next power of three. Three 3s become a 9, three 9s a 27, then 81, 243 and beyond. That one change reshapes the whole game: you are always thinking in triples, lining up three of a kind instead of pairs, which gives a rhythm that feels nothing like the doubling puzzles.

Every swipe shifts each tile and drops a new one onto the board. Plan your lanes, keep the big tiles cornered, chain merges to push your highest power higher, and watch the space tighten as it fills. A running score, a saved best, and the usual one-more-slide problem.

What one swipe actually does

Swipe the board, or use the arrows. Everything slides — that is the part people underestimate. Nothing merges here and no tile is ever added, so there is no run to lose and no score to keep: this is just the movement, and a count of how many triples happen to line up when it settles.

0triples lined up after this slide
0pairs — which would have been merges in a doubling game

Swipe in any direction. Watch how far a tile travels when the lane in front of it is empty.

No merging, no new tiles, no score, nothing saved — you cannot play this and you cannot lose it. Trilign is what happens next: the triples actually fuse, a fresh tile lands after every swipe, and the space you have left becomes the whole problem.
